Role of the Associate Editor

Once an article is accepted, the corresponding author is invited to become an Associate Editor of JAD with a one-year term beginning January 1st of the following calendar year. An Associate Editor can extend the one-year term in yearly increments by performing Acts of Service (defined below).  These Acts of Service ensure that our editors are always actively engaged in directing the journal’s future. The goal is for Associate Editors to solicit interesting work they see at meetings, etc. and have the manuscript submitted through them (http://www.j-alz.com/scheme.htm). This has the further goal that work in the journal reflects the breadth of our Associate Editors' interests, not just the Editors-in-Chief, Reviews Editor, or Senior Editors.

Act of Service

Extension

Publishing an article as corresponding author

One year extension*

Handling a submission to JAD (for original submission only – not revision; outcome of submission is not relevant)

One year extension*

Publishing a book review

One year extension*

Publishing a commentary

One year extension*

Guest editing a Special Issue

One year extension only (extensions are not granted for each article in the special issue but Senior editorship is awarded in the subsequent year)

*Note: While there is no limit on the number of years one can serve as an Associate Editor, multiple acts of service in any given year can be used to extend the term for up to two years at a time. Once this limit has been reached, additional acts of service will be applied to the goal of Senior editorship for that year. Therefore, extended service on the editorial board requires a continued commitment to the journal.

Role of the Associate Editor in the Review Process

  1. After a manuscript has been received requesting a particular Associate Editor, that Handling Associate Editor will be solicited to provide a list of 4-6 potential reviewers (either from the list provided by the authors, on his or her own, or a combination of the two).
  2. The Managing Editor will contact the identified reviewers through mstracker.com (the journal's online submission website). The Managing Editor will also solicit the Handling Associate Editor through the system as well. The Handling Associate Editor should accept the reviewer invitation at that time.
  3. Once all reviews are received, the Handling Associate Editor will be provided with the reviews and asked to enter a review using mstracker.com based on the provided reviews and his/her own assessment of the manuscript.
  4. Once the Handling Associate Editor has entered a review, the final decision will be made by the Editor-in-Chief assigned to the manuscript.
  5. Handling Associate Editors will be identified on accepted manuscripts as the communicating editor.

Determination of Senior Editor Status

To elevate to Senior Editor status, an Associate Editor must complete five (5) Acts of Service during a one-year period. Guest editing a Special Issue automatically qualifies the Associate Editor for Senior editorship in the subsequent year.

Role of the Senior Editor

Senior Editors will be appointed yearly based on completion of five (5) or more Acts of Service (defined above) during a one-year period (see Determination of Senior Editor Status). Senior Editors will be responsible for soliciting and handling review articles and, to maintain status as Senior Editor, must solicit at least two review articles per year as part of their five (5) Acts of Service.
