Biography & Research:
Alba Malara specialized in Geriatrics and Gerontology in 2001 at the University of Messina. In 2001 she won a research grant from the Department of Internal Medicine and Medical Therapy of the University Hospital of Messina. In this period she researched about metabolic pathaway leptin-mediated, platelet aggregaton an magnesium.
Since 2004 she has worked as geriatrician in residential facilities. Since 2007 she works as Medical Director in a Residential Center and Extensive Rehabilitation Continuous Cycle as well as in several other nursing homes in Calabria. She is specialized in Vascular Doppler Ultrasonography
Since 2007 she has worked as Scientific Coordinator of the " Scientific Committee of National Association of Third Age Residences (ANASTE). Since 2011 she has been scientific consultant for the European Confederation Home Care Organitation (ECHO), Brussels, Belgium.Since January 2015 she is Chairwoman of Italian Society Geriatrics and Gerontology (SIGG) Calabria
She has participated in several multicenter studies and in April 2014 she led the multiregional study "Project Pain in RSA Italian: Support Network for Non-cancer Pain," in collaboration with the Center HUB Policlinico Umberto I, Rome.
She coordinated the scientific secretariat of various events and the organization of several training courses in Geriatry. She is author of several scientific publications.
Dr Malara has set up a research methodology based on daily utilization of multidimensional geriatric assessment tests used for clinical practice in a network of nursing homes in Italy. Sharing the same assessment tools results in a wider collection of elderly patients samples and in a longer period of observation. In particular Dr Malara’s research is primaly focused on geriatric multidimensional assessment, dementia, behavioural problems, pain and farmachological and non pharmachological strategies, care of and of life, care quality and patients' quality of life.
