Biography & Research:
João José Oliveira Malva was born in Coimbra, January 1965.
He graduated in Biology (1987), obtained a PhD degree in Cell Biology (1997) and “Agregação” to full professor in 2009, at the University of Coimbra.
His research area has been enclosed in neuroscience, and currently he is Research Coordinator in the thematic field of Active and Healthy Ageing. He coordinates the researche group of Healthy Living and Active Ageing at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra.
He published 116 research papers and book chapters (international peer-reviewed journals), receiving >2800 citations, submitted 12 patents for protection and is Editor of a Springer book “Interaction Between Neurons and Glia in Aging and Disease”. He has been supervisor of 12 successful PhD students
He has been coordinator of 11 research projects in Neuroscience and in Ageing-related fields, including relevant projects in H2020 like the ERA Chair (ERA@UC) or the Teaming project (MIA-Portugal).
He was vice-Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Institute of the University of Coimbra, member of the Scientific Council and Assembly of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra. He was President of the Portuguese Society for Neuroscience and Full member of the European DANA Alliance for the Brain.
He coordinates the Consortium Ageing@Coimbra, an European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing Reference Site (3 stars). He is member of the board of coordinators of the Reference Site Collaborative Network (RSCN) and he is past deputy-Director of InnoSTARS of EIT Health (2015).
