Biography & Research:
Michelle’s main area of expertise is the genetics of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). During her PhD and first post-doctoral position at King's College London she investigated genetic risk factors affecting AD, dividing time between the wet lab and data analysis, including working on GWAS and Next Generation Sequencing studies. She worked with GERAD (Genetic and Environmental Risk in Alzheimer’s disease) and AddNeuroMed (Innovative Medicines (InnoMed) in Europe) cohorts with collaborative projects continuing to the present time.
In 2012 Michelle emigrated from the UK to Australia and secured a fellowship at QIMR Berghofer. Her research focus is the investigation of genetic variation associated with AD in healthy individuals. This work aims to improve understanding of the early effect of AD genetic risk factors, and identify biomarkers before clinical diagnosis. She is currently the genetics and epidemiology analyst for the Prospective Imaging Study of Aging: Genes, Brain and Behaviour (PISA). She also works on both elderly and young population based cohorts including OATS (Older Australian Twin Study), MAS (Sydney Memory and Aging Study) and QTIM (Queensland Twin Imaging) focusing on brain phenotypes including MRI measures. Her current h-index is 28 with 48 peer reviewed publications.
