Biography & Research:
Professor José Viña was born in Valencia, 1953. He studied medicine at the University of Valencia and did his doctoral work with Prof. Hans Krebs at Oxford. He is Professor of Physiology at the University of Valencia.
José Viña leads a successful research group called FRESHAGE that works on different aspects of aging, including healthy aging and its application to Alzheimer's disease.
His main contributions have been:
• First determination that mitochondria are key targets for aging;
• Identification of molecular mechanisms to explain why females live longer than males
• Identification of new longevity-associated genes, particularly those involved in p53 pathways, telomerase, RAS/GRF1, and antioxidants (G6PD)
• Identification of the genetic profile of centenarians (control of apoptosis) that gives them special resilience and resistance to frailty.
• Generation of a new experimental model for frailty in animals
• Determination of a clinical intervention to effectively delay frailty in humans.
• Identification of a new treatment (genistein) to significantly delay the onset of dementia in animals and very recently demonstration that the treatment is effective in humans (published in 2022).

Acknowledgement by peers: citation analysis
Dr Viña’s work has been acknowledged by his peers. Dr Viña’s papers (including book chapters) have been quoted over 25,400 times, yielding an h-Index of 78.
Dr Viña was the author of the most cited paper in the Biochemical Journal 1978, also in the Free Radical Biology and Medicine in 2003 and the Journal of Gerontology in 2013. He was the most cited author in Free Radical Research 2008.
