Biography & Research:
Dr. Scharre graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine, completed his Neurology residency in San Francisco and his Neurobehavior fellowship at UCLA. Since 1993 he has been the Director of the Division of Cognitive Neurology in the Department of Neurology at Ohio State University. He is also the Medical Director of the OSU Memory Disorders Research Center and the OSU Memory Disorders Clinic with over 2500 patient-visits a year.
Professor Scharre is a clinical researcher, and a master clinician regarding diagnosis and management of cognitive issues. His research focuses on early detection of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and dementia using biomarkers, cognitive evaluation and functional neuroimaging. He developed SAGE, the self-administered cognitive assessment tool (downloaded worldwide over a million times) and the 4-Turn Test for assessment of driving abilities. He has conducted over 140 dementia related multi-center and investigator initiated clinical trials sponsored by industry and the National Institute of Health (NIH).
He has published on dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment, Parkinson’s disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia, neuroimaging in dementia, and neuropsychiatric aspects of neurological disease. His book, titled “long-Term management of Dementia”, serves as a valuable resource in caring for individuals with dementia. His peers have selected him as one of the Best Doctor’s in America continuously from 2005 through 2018.
