Biography & Research:
Mychael V. Lourenco received his BSc in Genetics, MSc in Biochemistry, and PhD in Biochemistry/Neuroscience from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He is an assistant professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and has conducted research in cellular and molecular neuroscience, with emphasis on cellular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. His main questions relate to mechanisms driving synapse failure in neurodegeneration, and how to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in Alzheimer's disease. His fields of expertise include molecular pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, synapses, neuronal protein synthesis, neuroprotective role of hormones, and mouse behavior. He is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, International Society for Neurochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Cognition Society and the National Institute for Translational Neuroscience (INNT/Brazil).
