Biography & Research:
Dr. Zaheer’s research group uses interdisciplinary approaches to understand the role of Glia maturation factor (GMF), a brain specific protein, discovered in his laboratory, in the regulation of neuroinflammation leading to neurodegeneration. His research efforts are directed towards understanding molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of signal transduction pathways relevant to inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model with clinical and pathological similarities to Multiple Sclerosis. Dr. Zaheer’s studies are supported by RO1 grants from National Institute of Aging, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and VA Merit Review Award.
