Biography & Research:
Odete da Cruz e Silva is head of the Neuroscience and Signalling Group. Research areas include: the molecular basis of Alzheimer's disease, Signal Transduction and Protein Phosphorylation, Biomarker discovery, Neuronal Regeneration and Biomaterials in Neuroscience. The latter has also incorporated studying the effect of piezoelectric biomaterials. The research has evolved towards Translational Research and Odete is responsible for the pcb-Cohort (primary care based); a group of almost 600 volunteers from the Aveiro region who participate in cognitive tests and donate biological fluids for the Biomarker discovery project. The group was responsible for the Portal for Family Members and Caregivers of Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease (2010-2015), and for which they were awarded the Angelini University Award in 2011. Besides coordinating the Neuroscience and Signalling Group she was Director of the Centre for Cell Biology from 2010 to 2015.
In the International front, Odete da Cruz e Silva has been involved in five European Projects and Nationally in 17 projects (PI in 9). Other activities include Associate Editor in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, Member of the Editorial Board of Neurodegeneration (a speciality of Frontiers in Neurology, Neuroscience and Psychiatry), and review Editor in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience and Advances in Biology (Biochemistry subject area). The work has resulted in over 100 publications and has been recognized with prizes from the Astra Zeneca Foundation and the Gulbenkian Prize for stimulating research. Initiatives as an Entrepreneur include setting up a start up company (2CTech) whose services have now been transferred to within the university and the efforts were recognized with the prize UATEC “Empreende+”.
