Biography & Research:
Dr. Jorge Fuentealba has been chairman of the Physiology Department and Director of the Bioequivalence Unit at the Universidad of Concepción for the past 6 years (2011-2017). He is a Pharmacist (2000, U. de Chile) and obtained his Master´s degree in Clinical Trials (2005, U. Autonoma de Madrid, Spain). In 2004 he obtained his PhD in Pharmacology from the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Madrid, Spain) where his thesis work contributed to deciphering the correlation between neuronal nicotinic receptor and calcium signals on cellular excitability. Dr. Fuentealba has received several distinguished awards related to his scientific work in basic science (VI Iberoamerican Meeting of Alzheimer, Nestle prize 2011, Nestle prize 2012). Dr. Fuentealba is the Vice-President of the Chilean Society of Pharmacology and he has contributed to the development of Neuropharmacology in the fields of neurodegenerative pathologies. He has approximately 40 indexed publications and is a principle investigator of important grants related to the topics of his expertise. He has directed the scientific work of several ungraduate students (20) and 10 MSc students, and 5 PhD students are developing their thesis work under his direction. Dr. Fuentealba is involved in several postgraduate programs related with Cellular and Molecular Biology, Pharmacology and Clinical Biochemistry. Additionally, he is a board member of a study group for FONDECYT (National Foundation for Science and Technology, Chile). He is currently working on studies related to the screening and characterization of new molecules with neuroprotective properties, and his group is studying the role of purinergic receptors in AD pathology.
