Biography & Research:
My research efforts have focused upon identifying biomarkers and genetic variants that mediate a variety of complex human diseases, including defects of neural tube formation during embryonic development, the onset of sepsis and organ dysfunction following traumatic injury, and most recently, risk for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other forms of dementia. Current research in my lab is focused broadly on the impact of genetic and epigenetic factors on risk and age at symptom onset for neurodegeneration, particularly Alzheimer’s. I am also interested in the biology of AD among Mexican Americans and how disease risk, age at onset and underlying etiology may differ between this under-studied ethnic group and non-Hispanic whites.
