Biography & Research:
Prof. Hauer, born February 27th 1956, is leading the research department at the Bethanien Hospital/Geriatric centre at the Ruprecht-Karls University of Heidelberg/Germany. He was appointed Professor (APL) at the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg in 2011. Prof.. Hauer received his “Habilitation” (equivalent for PhD med) at the medical faculty of the University of Heidelberg in 2005 and was “coopted” (including professoral rights for academic training and mentoring) at the faculty of Empirical Social and Behavioural Science. In 1995 he had finished his doctoral thesis (PhD) in Sport Science at the University of Heidelberg after he had successfully passed the first and second “State Exam” for teaching biology and sports science at higher educational level (Gymnasium).
He held a number of professional positions including a graduate position at the University of Heidelberg, department of internal Medicine/Cardiology in cardiovascular research, a position as senior scientist at the Robert Bosch Hospital/Foundation in Stuttgart and a position at the German Cancer research centre in Heidelberg. He was research group leader at the Bethanien Hospital, before he became leader of the research department. He is currently engaged in a number of national and European research projects. Prof. Hauer has received a number of well renowned awards for his research in the field of Geriatrics, Gerontology, Rehabilitation Medicine and Methodology.
