Biography & Research:
In recent years, we have uses antidiabetics to offset cognitive decline in brain aging (e.g., thiazolidinediones, intranasal insulin) and we have obtained considerable evidence that insulin plays an important role in neurons, where it may reduce Ca2+ flux. Approaches emphasized the use of intranasal insulin delivery and more recently, we have used AAV delivery of a constitutively active human form of the β subunit of the insulin receptor, as well as sigma 2 receptor ligands to increase expression and signaling through the insulin receptor in order to combat aging processes.
