Biography & Research:
Corette Wierenga studied physics and then completed her PhD in neurobiolgy in Amsterdam. After postdoc positions in the labs of Gina Turrigiano (Brandeis Univ) and Tobias Bonhoeffer (Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology), she is leading the Synaptic Physiology lab at Utrecht University.
Her research focuses on structural plasticity and the formation of inhibitory synapses. She combines two-photon microscopy, electrophysiology with techniques from molecular biology to label or manipulate specific proteins in brain slices. Synaptic dysfunction and impaired coordination between excitatory and inhibitory signals are at the basis of many brain disorders, including autism and early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
