Biography & Research:
Dr. Katie Schenning is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon, United States. Dr. Schenning is a physician-scientist building a research career focused on the effects of anesthesia and surgery on perioperative neurocognitive disorders in older adults. Her research experiences range from basic science to translational and clinical studies. Currently, she is completing a longitudinal prospective study investigating the role of Alzheimer’s risk factors on cognitive and functional decline after spine surgery in older adults. Dr. Schenning’s research is currently supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), and the Alzheimer’s Association.
Clinically, Dr. Schenning is a board-certified anesthesiologist providing anesthesia care for adult patients focusing on geriatric and neuroanesthesiology. She is also the Assistant Medical Director of the Preoperative Medicine Clinic at OHSU. In this role, she spearheaded a quality effort to employ geriatric assessments (ie. cognitive and frailty screening) to all older adults presenting to the clinic for preoperative evaluation.
Dr. Schenning received her medical and MPH degrees from the University of Wisconsin and her MCR from Oregon Health & Science University. Upon completing residency training in Anesthesiology and a research fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University in 2014, she joined the faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine at OHSU.
