Biography & Research:
Dementia is a general term for loss of memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia. Dementia is not a single disease. This devastating neurodegenerative disorder, affects millions worldwide. Emerging evidence underscores the critical role of nutrition in dementia prevention, management, and treatment. This work synthesized the complex relationships between diet, nutrition, and dementia, highlighting the therapeutic potential of nutritional interventions. A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential nutrients (vitamin D, B6, B12, antioxidants, and polyphenols) may reduce dementia risk by 30-50%. Conversely, unhealthy diets high in saturated fats, sugar, and salt increase dementia risk. Mediterranean and MIND diets have demonstrated significant cognitive benefits, slowing decline by 40-50%. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in vitamin D, B12, and iron, are prevalent in dementia patients, exacerbating cognitive decline. Malnutrition and dehydration, affecting 20-50% of dementia patients, worsen health outcomes. Personalized nutrition strategies, and nutrition-based interventions hold promise for dementia prevention and treatment. Early nutritional interventions, combined with lifestyle modifications, may delay dementia onset and progression. Healthcare providers should prioritize nutrition education, counseling, and screening for malnutrition and dehydration. Future research should focus on translational studies, nutrition-based therapeutics, and policy initiatives promoting healthy diets and dementia prevention.
