Biography & Research:
Sergio T. Ferreira graduated in Chemistry in 1985 at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and obtained his PhD in 1989 from the Institute of Biophysics of the same University. In 1990, he was hired as Assistant Professor at the Institute of Medical Biochemistry at UFRJ. Since 1999, he has been Professor of Biochemistry at the same Institute. Since 2014 he holds a double appointment as Professor of Biophysics and Neuroscience at the Institute of Biophysics of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. From 1998-2007 he held an additional appointment as Associate Investigator at the Brazilian National Synchrotron Light Laboratory (Campinas, State of Sao Paulo). Ferreira has served on a number of academic positions. He was Scientific Director of the Institute (2011-2015), Department Chair (2001-2004), Associate Chair (1996-1999) and Chair of the Graduate Program in Biological Chemistry of UFRJ (1999-2001).
Currently, he is Chair of the Scientific Program Committee of the Alzheimer's Association International Conference AAIC (2022-2023), and has been AAIC Theme Lead in Basic Science and Pathogenesis (2019-present). He was Vice-President (1998 to 2000) and Secretary-General (2001-2002) of the Brazilian Biophysical Society, served as Council Member of the Brazilian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1997-2001), and was a Member of the Committee on Symposia and Workshops of the International Union for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) (2006-2014). He was Vice-Chairman (2003-2005), Chairman (2006-2009) and Past-President (2009-2013) of the Pan-American Association for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (PABMB). From 1998 to 2003, he chaired the Regional Nominating Committee for the Pew Latin American Fellows Program. He has served on the Editorial Advisory Board of FEBS Journal (2007-2013), Biochemical Journal (2014-2020), Journal of Neurochemistry (2012-2017) and PLOS One (2008-2014). Currently, he is a member of the Editorial Boards of Dementia&Neuropsychologia (2010- ), Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment & Disease Monitoring (2015- ), Journal of Alzheimer's Disease Reports, and is Regional Editor for Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
He has received a number of national and international Awards, including being twice appointed a Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Research Scholar (1997-2001; 2002-2006), Pew Latin American Fellow in the Biomedical Sciences (1992), Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (2001), induction to the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (2000) and induction to the National Order for Scientific Merit of the Republic of Brazil (2004).
Ferreira has authored or co-authored over 200 scientific articles, reviews and book chapters, and his main research interest focus is on mechanisms of synapse damage and failure leading to cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s disease.
